Combined cleaning and Thin Layer Technology processes for metal pretreatment.

TI is a titanium treatment designed for spray application on steel, aluminium and zinc metals. It will clean the surface and leave an amorphous complex zirconium titanium oxide coating, which inhibits corrosion and improves the adhesion to post applied organic coatings.

All Thin Layer Technology products conform to BS EN ISO 9717 2013 as well as Def Stan 03-11/5 Class IV.

Aquus® TI 0.8 35-50 Liquid A single pack, high performance, high coating weight product, amorphous complex titanium oxide coating, which inhibits corrosion and improves the adhesion of subsequently applied organic coatings. Coating weights are normally in the range 0.2-0.5g/m2.

Health & Safety:
This product is acidic. Refer to the Health & Safety data sheet for safe handling and use.

It is recommended that the tank and fittings are made from stainless steel grade 316S16. This includes the heating elements and any spray nozzles. Click here for suitable equipment.

Process - Dip or Spray:

TI will degrease and treat in one operation. Pre-cleaning is not necessary unless the work is heavily soiled. If pre-cleaning is required, however, it must be followed by a suitable rinse stage.

Set-up and Testing:

Spray Process
The starting solution should be prepared by adding 10 litres (11kg) of TI to every 1000 litres of clean water. Charge the tank with two thirds capacity of clean water, heat to 35°C and add the AQUUS ZIR-PHOS. Finally top up the tank with clean water and mix well.
Add 1 litre of ADDITIVE 342 per 1,000 litres of solution to adjust the pH to 4.0

Take a 50 ml sample of working solution, add 3 to 6 drops of phenolphthalein solution and titrate with 0.1N Sodium Hydroxide until the colour changes to permanent pink. Note the volume of 0.1N Sodium Hydroxide used. This is called the “pointage”.

A working solution prepared as above requires 2.5 ml of 0.1N Sodium Hydroxide and is known as a 2.5 point solution. To increase the “pointage” by one point add 1 litre (1.1 kg) of TI per 1000 litres of working solution. Best results are achieved if the tank is tested and adjusted frequently.

Test the pH using an accurate and buffered pH meter. Under normal circumstances the pH should stay within the operating range 3.8 - 4.2. In the event that a large amount ofTI has to be added, it may prove necessary to adjust the pH with ADDITIVE 342 .

Heat to 35 - 50°C. Spray the work in theTI solution for sufficient time to convert the metal surface to a uniform coating. The time required is usually 1.5 to 3 minutes. If a pre-cleaning stage is undertaken, shorter process times of about 1 minute will be sufficient to generate a satisfactory coating.

Water Rinsing:
Following theTI treatment, the work must be rinsed with water. The flow of water through the rinse should be regulated to ensure that the rinse stage does not become excessively contaminated. Testing and control of rinse stages are covered in Technical Bulletin Number 1.

Following water rinsing, the work must dried immediately.

General Maintenance:
Automatic equipment can be used to monitor and control the strength of theTI working solution. Enviro Tech will, if requested, outline available equipment.

In the course of the TI process, sludge is formed as a by-product of the chemical reactions. This sludge settles to the bottom of the tank and should be removed regularly to prevent dusty coatings.

After the solution has been in use for some time, scale will form on the heating elements which must be removed at regular intervals to ensure that adequate heat transfer and proper processing temperatures can be maintained.

The timescale for maintenance depends on the use of the equipment and must be determined from experience.

TI solution must not be discharged to main drain without neutralisation and removal of any separated oils and solids material.
