Description:
CLEAN 112 is a medium duty, liquid non-etch alkali cleaner designed to clean aluminium and its alloys by spray or dip prior to pre-treatment processes.

Health & Safety:
This product is alkaline. Refer to the Health & Safety data sheet for safe handling and use.

Equipment:
The tank may be of mild steel construction but it is recommended that the fittings are made from stainless steel grade 316S16. This includes the heating elements and any spray nozzles.. See a list of suitable equipment here.

Set-up and Testing:
The makeup of the bath should be 10 litres (12kg) of CLEAN 112 to every 1000 litres of water. To prepare a new bath, charge the tank to three quarters capacity with clean cold water, heat to 50°C and add enough of the CLEAN 112 to satisfy the full capacity. Mix well and finally top up the tank with clean water and mix well.

The strength of the solution may be varied depending on the amount and type of soil to be removed. Concentration may vary from as low as 5 litres
(6 kg) up to 30 litres (36 kg) per 1000 litres of working solution.

Take a 10 ml sample of the diluted CLEAN 112 from the tank, add about 5 drops of bromocresol green indicator and titrate with 0.1N sulphuric acid until the green colour changes to yellow. Note the volume of 0.1N sulphuric acid in ml required. This is referred to as the pointage.

The strength of the ready for use CLEAN 112 solution is determined in accordance with the following table:

At the recommended dose of 10 litres per 1000 litres the pointage would be about 7.5.

An addition of 4 litres (5 kg) of CLEAN 112 per 1000 litres of working solution is required to raise the pointage by one.

Automatic equipment can be used to control the solution. It will however still be necessary a manual pointage check at regular intervals.

Process:
Spray: The work is sprayed with CLEAN 112 for sufficient time to allow cleaning to be completed, usually between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. The operating temperature is usually in the range 40 - 60°C and once the optimum temperature has been established it should be maintained.

Dip: The work is immersed in CLEAN 112 for a sufficient time to allow cleaning to be completed, usually between 5 and 15 minutes. The operating temperature is usually in the range 50 - 60°C. The use of in tank circulation will reduce cleaning times.

The cleaning solution gradually accumulates greases and soils and it should be discarded when the contamination interferes with cleaning efficiency.

Water Rinsing:
Following the CLEAN 112 stage the work is rinsed with one or two stages of water rinses which are overflowed sufficiently to prevent excessive contamination. Testing and control of rinse stages are covered in Technical Bulletin Number 1.

Effluent:
CLEAN 112 solution must not be discharged to main drainage without neutralisation and removal of any separated oils and solids.
